About the International Dialogue on STEM Education 2019
The world is changing rapidly. Global developments such as digitization, climate change, increasing social inequality and migration will also impact the lives of people still in pre-school age today. Early education should help children become self-determined adults who can help shape global challenges.
The "International Dialogue on STEM Education" (IDoS) is a joint conference of the "Haus der kleinen Forscher" Foundation and Siemens Stiftung. The IDoS conference takes place under the auspices of the German Commission for UNESCO. Further partners and sponsors are the German Federal Foreign Office, Robert Bosch Stiftung and the OECD.
Target group of IDoS conference
The "International Dialogue on STEM Education" is a biennial conference series. This 2017 newly established global forum on early STEM education brings together 100 scientists, decision-makers in politics, economy, civil society and culture, and representatives of leading initiatives worldwide with a focus of their work on early childhood education in the field of „STEM Education for Sustainable Development“ at Robert Bosch Stiftung - Representative Office Berlin, Germany on 5 and 6 of December 2019.
The key question of the conference is: – “How do we empower children through STEM education to contribute to creating sustainable societies?"
Mission and thematic focus of IDoS 2019
The mission of the conference in 2019 is to position STEM education as a strategy to enhance young children’s capabilities to create sustainable societies in the 21st century. We want to achieve an open dialogue on the importance of using STEM education to contribute to the fulfilment of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference will make a contribution to closing the gap between traditional theory and concrete action on STEM Education for Sustainable Development by providing a platform that brings together practitioners, scientists, and decision-makers.
The thematic focus in 2019 will be on “STEM Education for Sustainable Development”, preferably in the area of early childhood education. The goals of the conference are to discuss and analyse existing frameworks and activities, to jointly identify potential for the future, and to enable participants to implement ideas gathered at the conference in their home countries. Guided by the key question of the conference – “How do we strengthen children through STEM education to create sustainable societies?” – the participants will exchange, discuss and reflect views on future-oriented STEM education for children to learn from one another.
What’s new about the IDoS 2019?
IDoS 2019 was elaborated by a programme committee looking for innovative projects that show how “STEM Education for Sustainable Development” is put into practice. Therefore a “call for projects” was published. Seven initiatives, from six continents will be given the opportunity to showcase their outstanding work in the form of a workshop delivered at the conference. Their fresh point of view will give participants a sense of empowerment in relation to what they are already doing and to motivate and inspire them to improve their work.
