We live in a time of rapid, accelerating, and profound changes in our complex bio-geophysical-social world. We face daunting, unprecedented challenges, including climate change, resource limitations, and societal inequity. Designing for change and adaptive governance must become the norm to catalyze collective behavior change to sustainability for the future well-being of society. Therefore, our society and future generations must learn and be inspired from early childhood through lifelong learning by STEM concepts and methods with sensitivity to diverse social/cultural contexts and in collaborative processes.

Second Keynote “Educating towards sustainability: Connecting to Self, Others and Nature”

Dr Ha Vinh Tho, Former Program Director of the Gross National Happiness (GNH) center Bhutan and Co-Founder of Eurasia Foundation, Vietnam

Rapid, sweeping, and long-lasting change is altering our planet’s environment in an unprecedented manner. It will require a wholesale change in the way we think and the way we act – a rethink of how we relate to one another and how we interact with the ecosystems that support our lives. This is where education has a critical role to play. Education for Sustainable Development is about shaping a better tomorrow for all – and it must start today. Based on large-scale implementation experiences in many schools in Bhutan and Vietnam, we will explore how, beginning with early education, we can offer children a sound foundation that can empower them to make positive contributions towards a sustainable future, while at the same time helping them to develop the competencies they will need to be responsible citizens in tomorrow’s society.
