Review of IDoS 2017
On 2 and 3 November 2017, the "International Dialogue on STEM" (IDoS) brought together in Berlin over 130 experts from all over the world. Guided by the key question of the conference – "What skills and abilities do children need for a worthwhile future, and what contribution can we make?" – the participants exchanged views on future-oriented education for children in keynotes, panel discussions, and working groups.
The focus of the event was on early childhood and primary education (i.e., education for children between the ages of three and around 10) in the domains of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and on an extended concept of STEM (STEM + Language, STEM + Computer Science, STEM + the Arts, etc.).
The aim was to provide representatives of like-minded initiatives from all over the world with a platform for exchange in order to facilitate joint reflection, to learn from others, and to give and receive ideas and suggestions.
The opening keynote on the topic was delivered by PISA researcher and OECD Director for Education and Skills, Prof. Andreas Schleicher. Dr Auma Obama, Founder and Director of the Sauti Kuu ("Powerful Voices") Foundation in Kenya rounded off the conference with a very encouraging keynote on the topic. This youtube-video gives a good impression of the first "International Dialogue on STEM".
